Civic Reception Celebrating South Yorkshire’s Sporting Heroes at Canon Medical Arena

Canon Medical Arena was proud to host a special civic reception on Friday 8th November 2024, celebrating the outstanding achievements of South Yorkshire athletes across the Olympics, Paralympics, and Special Olympics.

The event, led by South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, brought together athletes, civic leaders, and key figures from across the region to honour a remarkable year of sporting success, with local athletes contributing to an incredible 24 medals across the three Games.

Among those in attendance were Olympic and Paralympic medallists including Yasmin Harper, Cindy Ngamba, and Special Olympics gold and silver medallist Niall Guite, alongside athletes who trained at the Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and represented the region on the world stage.

Guests also heard from Stephanie Peacock, who praised the strength of South Yorkshire’s sporting ecosystem and its continued contribution to national and international success.

The evening featured a series of interviews with athletes, hosted by sports presenter Tanya Arnold, offering insight into their journeys, challenges, and achievements at Paris 2024 and beyond.

Notable attendees included former world boxing champion Johnny Nelson, rising motorsport talent Rowan Campbell-Pilling, and Tim Hollingsworth, alongside a wide range of business and civic leaders from across South Yorkshire.

The reception highlighted the vital role of Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park and its world-class facilities in developing elite talent, while reinforcing the region’s commitment to supporting sport at every level — from grassroots participation to international competition.
